Frankie
Heartworm disease is attacking her heart and lungs, making even simple moments harder than they should be. And yet, Frankie keeps going — trusting, loving, and holding on.
Treatment is her only path forward. It’s long, costly, and not easy, but it is lifesaving. We are committed to doing everything we can to give Frankie the chance to heal and to finally live without pain. Recently, a local county shelter reached out to us about a dog who was suffering from a severe eye condition. Her pain was significant, and the situation was urgent. They asked if Adoption First Animal Rescue could help.
Before we were able to finalize plans to take her into our care, the shelter made the compassionate decision to move forward immediately with the surgery she desperately needed. They took her to their veterinarian, where she underwent an enucleation (removal of the eye). This was absolutely the right call, as she was clearly suffering, and we are grateful they acted quickly to relieve her pain.
After surgery, the shelter contacted us again to see if we could take her in for recovery. We coordinated transport, and she safely made her way to Adoption First, where she is now settling into a foster home and focusing on healing and rest.
We would love for our community to follow along on her recovery journey as she continues to heal, decompress, and begin her next chapter surrounded by care and comfort.

Mama Meni
Sweet Meni is expecting puppies any day now — though we’re not sure how many little ones she’s carrying. What we do know is that she needs a lot of support to safely bring her babies into the world and to begin her own journey back to health. ❤️ Meni recently tested heartworm positive, meaning she’ll require costly, lifesaving treatment once her puppies are born and she’s stable. Chronic, relentless ear infections have left her suffering for far too long. Her ears are damaged beyond repair, and medication can no longer help. The only chance Jill has for relief is an urgent TECA surgery (Total Ear Canal Ablation) — a major, life-saving procedure that will finally end her pain.
Without this surgery, Jill will continue to suffer. The infection and inflammation cause constant discomfort, headaches, and distress. No dog should have to live this way.
As a nonprofit rescue, we are doing everything we can — but we cannot do this alone. TECA surgery is expensive, and Jill does not have time to wait. Every day without surgery is another day she lives in pain.

Rusty
Rusty is a small but mighty pup who has already endured so much in his young life. Despite his challenges, he remains brave and affectionate, wagging his tail and showing trust in the humans who are trying to help him heal. But Rusty’s journey to recovery is far from over.
You see, Rusty urgently needs a leg amputated due to a serious injury, and on top of that, he’s struggling with painful skin issues that make daily life uncomfortable and stressful. Every day, Rusty faces pain that no pup should have to endure. His skin problems require ongoing care, medication, and attention, and without proper treatment, his discomfort will only worsen.

Heartworm Treatment
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworms are completely preventable with a monthly prevention. About half of the dogs in county animal shelters are positive for heartworms. Many rescues are unable to take these dogs in because of the extensive cost to treat. We are fortunate enough to have great donors, a wonderful vet staff, and a great fundraising team that has allowed us to take on Heartworm Positive dogs.
